XE 17.1 - Here's what's new

by Glass Team Kiley M on ‎05-13-2014 12:25 PM - last edited on ‎05-15-2014 04:01 PM by Community Advocate Becca S

PB&J, cookies and milk, french fries and ranch dressing (anyone with me on this one?). Some things are just better together, like Glass updates and MyGlass. This week we’re introducing new features for the Android MyGlass app, which is coming later this week. Below is a sneak peek at what you’ll see when you update, and you can find the Release Notes here.

  • Share Places from Maps to Glass (requires Android MyGlass 3.0)Remember when you could look up a destination on your phone, then send it to Glass to get directions? Ok, maybe you weren’t an Explorer yet. For those who were, remember how sad it was when you couldn’t do that anymore? Well, guess what? It’s baaaaaccckkk! It’s really easy, too.

  1. Open Google Maps on Android
  2. Search for an address or Place
  3. Select “Share” and then choose “Glass”
  4. Glass will receive the directions and start navigation

  • Streamlined MyGlass Android appThe MyGlass Android app has undergone a little spring cleaning. There are a couple cool things to note. You can now use MyGlass to enter Wi-Fi passwords - no QR code necessary. We’ve also got a new layout:

Both the Glass update and also the new MyGlass Android app will be rolling out over the next few days. Let us know in the comments what you think.

I like the confidential Glassware in the screenshot... Shame we can't see what it is, eh? :smileywink:

Thanks for the update!

First!!! Does this update have any bug fixes? XE16+ has been having a lot of lag issues for me. If I use voice commands for Google, it goes back to the home showing the time before it opens up the screen for search by voice input.

Wish you all would post a public proper change log like the Linux community developers do. Especially with this still in development. Imagine the awesome feedback of there was more openness with the community. Look what that kind of openness has done for Android and Linux.
by Level 3 David D S on ‎05-13-2014 01:21 PM
If not of. No way to correct it.. Sigh..
by Level 2 Chad C on ‎05-13-2014 01:25 PM

Nice when can we expect the Factory System Image for 17 or 17.1 on the https://developers.google.com/glass/tools-downloads/system page?

hoping the iOS app gets a little love here too -- I am an apple fan girl, but I love my google glass too! :-)

by Level 11 Dr Bennett F on ‎05-13-2014 03:16 PM

Now just bring back Video Calling and I will be a happy camper

by Level 8 Ivan Y on ‎05-13-2014 03:28 PM

Very excited about the Maps to Glass feature is making a comeback! Imagine trying to use navigation in a foreign country with non-English addresses.

Btw @Brian B - There's an event on Thursday at NYC basecamp about the release of some travel Glasswares. Maybe that's it :smileywink:

by Level 4 Derek R on ‎05-13-2014 05:02 PM

Looks great! Thanks for bringing back the sharing of directions to Glass.

I know it doesn't make for great PR, but let's hope there are some lag and stability fixes as well.

Edit: +1 on the changelog.

by Level 6 James B on ‎05-13-2014 06:12 PM

I don't care about these changes at all. Please fix bluetooth keyboard support and gesture-to-key-event fallbacks.

by Level 12 Drew R on ‎05-13-2014 08:30 PM

These changes are frustrating...maps to glass already exists with Ceramic Notifier, and a new look for MyGlass is hardly the update I (or the many users like me) who are experiencing constant reboots, inexplicable lag, heat and a myriad of other systemic issues.

by Level 13 Robert V on ‎05-14-2014 05:06 AM

How is entering Wi-Fi passwords without QR codes a new feature?  Hasn't the Android MyGlass app always done that?

by Level 5 Keith W on ‎05-14-2014 09:46 AM

Not to be a dead horse On second thought, let's pulverize it.  I'm with Drew, and likely many others, that these changes are frustrating.  My Glass stays at home most of the time, since XE16 and beyond, because it is so amazingly and embarassingly unstable to use.  I use it at most a few minutes a day, just long enough to take a snap or two of my dog, send a Hangouts message, then make it burn up and reboot.  Of course Feedback reports have been sent.

We need general system stability and lots of butter, not frivolous re-introduction of a feature that can be had by alternative means.

Regardless, thanks. :smileyhappy:

I've started powering off my glass every morning after charging, then I power it on when I'm heading out the door. Since doing this, most of my problems that occurred (heat/slow) with XE16 are gone. I'm still amazed at the computer on my face, but I'm annoyed at daily reboots (but it could be worse...).

I also want to see a full changelog, and a bluetooth keyboard with a touchpad/cursor(optional) would be great.  I keep asking for a touchpad stylus like thing (think Grenco MicroG used as a wireless touchpad from your pocket)

Remember when we could do video calls?  They are NOT "baaaaaccckkk!"

by Level 2 Dre J on ‎05-14-2014 08:05 PM
Video call need to return to the stage, ASAP, no rocky, Problems.
by Level 4 Dickie A on ‎05-15-2014 05:23 PM
I like the new clean app. And while I miss the video call functionality, it isn't a show stopper for me. I think we are getting close to the public release, however. The product is getting more refined than it ever has been.

Me gusta...

Still have random reboots under XE17.1..

Please I want a stable release !

And if not too much I'd like bluetooth keyboard support, will be great !

Just received the MyGlass 3.0 update.  Love it the new look and being able to send map/directions to Glass.

by Level 4 Winton L S on ‎05-16-2014 04:32 PM

First love the latest update. Especially the ease of connecting to wifi...kudos to all. I know I personally have loved every moment, even the glitches. Just to have a chance to test this cutting edge technology. I screencast daily to show folks how this excellent piece of equipment works. I could certainly join the ranks of people on, what is wrong, what could be improved, and so on. But I really want to say what a pleasure it has been to participate and demo this technology. I do not see enough kudos to the Google Team for just having the wherewithall to put this to market and allow all of us to test drive Glass. Just a big thank you. I have enjoyed the ride to date and look forward to more updates and surprises. Good job Google Glass Team.

The constant and consistant, random rebooting & the overheating are very fustrating actions in the XE17 release. Please, we need a more stable environment! Thanks, I needed to vent. ::smileyhappy:

by Level 3 Keith M on ‎05-19-2014 12:33 PM
I don't think mine is overheating. I am getting constant reboots though.
by Level 7 Tim R on ‎05-19-2014 12:38 PM

It's useless..... I spend more time doing resets and taking it off and putting it back on my head.

by Level 7 Miguel G on ‎05-19-2014 01:22 PM

17.1 is definelty more responsive than XE12 and XE16 but I am experiencing random reboots, bad battery life, and overheating.  Is there a way to send crash reports and usage to google? Could I pull that data with ADB?

by Level 2 Ghazanfar B on ‎05-20-2014 02:54 AM

I have XE12 came with the glass, how to update firmware?

by Level 3 Chip M on ‎05-21-2014 07:01 AM

It should update itself if it's connected to WiFi, and a charger at the same time.

by Level 6 Janice J on ‎05-21-2014 10:34 AM

XE17.1 - In the last 4 hours I've had 6 random reboots!!!  WTF??  I did a hard reset 30 minutes ago - when I turned Glass back on, it got so hot I had to take it off.  It's now sitting on my desk.  It's cool to the touch now, but wow, was it HOT!  The lag is just as bad as with XE16.  I thought it seemed better the first couple of days but this morning I tried to take a note and it went back to the clock screen, then to the Take a Note screen before finally going to the Evernote screen.... then another delay before the mic showed up.  Haven't had that happen before.

Please Google, stabilize my Glass!!!

by Level 2 Walter B on ‎05-24-2014 06:21 PM
Figure that I just got mine and I am experiencing the unplasent things you all describe. How often does Google pushes updates?
by Level 3 John M on ‎05-31-2014 05:46 AM

I am still getting the random reboots  over & over again

1-5 per hour

no better after updating from 17.1 to 17.2

by Level 5 Robert H on ‎05-31-2014 07:14 AM

Same as everybody else.  Random reboots.  Glass seems to be running hot.  Battery life is about 4 hours with extremely light use.  Not really usable in it's current form.  Glass is now just sitting on the shelf waiting for stable sotware.

by Level 2 Gloria L on ‎06-13-2014 07:51 PM

Please make sensors for the glass so that it can read the wearers Blood Pressure and Pulse.  Later, heart rate and other medical features specific to the wearer.

by Level 2 Race V on ‎06-15-2014 06:20 AM

Is there a Google Glass developers site/page for entering and tracking bug/defect/problems/issues so that Glass owners know their problems are being addressed.

Seems having a list of people's complaints does littel more than allow them to vent. Where is the positive and constructive feedback as to when their problems will be resolved other than having to complain in a "new" features thread?

I am open to sugguestions and referalls to sites with answers.
